A Brief History

1967 discovered

Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by the African Masai warrior Ndugu Jumanne Ngoma Kisuahili (meaning "makes music on Tuesday") in the Merelani Hills near the city of Arusha. The gemstone made its way to New York with the help of the Indian businessman Manuel D’Souza.

It was not until the gemstones reached the hands of the famous New York Tiffany jeweler, Henry B Platt, the grandson of Louis Comfort Tiffany, that its value and a market began to develop. Today the precious stones are heralded by specialists as the gemstone of the 20th century.
The only active mines today are in the picturesque hills of Merelani near the city Arusha and are kept under strict, state control; the stones are allocated conscientiously to licensed dealers.
